Obituary for Shirley Singer Wood

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Shirley S. Wood on October 17, 2023. She was born on November 11, 1927, in Washington, D.C. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles, her daughter Susan Wood, and her parents Emma and Edwin Singer. She was a loving mother to Deborah Sears and Melinda Baker and sons-in-law James Baker and David McConnell. She was grandmother to Matthew Baker (Naomi) and great-grandmother to Joseph, Samuel, and Kaela Baker. She also leaves many family relatives and friends, including her 'adopted daughter' Mary Kelly.

Shirley went to art college as a young woman and was a very talented painter, draftsman of house plans, and maker of quilts. Later she did more and more cross stitch, churning out pictures like butter, lots of which were of kitties. Shirley and Charlie got into boating in their early married life which led to finding friends who liked to boat which led to all of them getting bigger boats that they could spend the night on and travel and dock all around the Potomac. No one cared how much money people made or how expensive their boats were, just the love of doing it and doing it together, which led to many years of happy memories.

In the early 80’s Shirley and Charlie became part owners of Windmill Point and were very, very happy during their time there, making many friends. Though sometimes grasping for words that wouldn't come, she listened to a Frank Sinatra tape a couple of Christmases ago and still could sing every word.

Shirley was very generous and giving always to her family in many ways, and we will miss her presence in our lives so very much.

A graveside funeral service will be held at Fort Lincoln Cemetery in Brentwood, MD at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 25, 2023 and Shirley will be laid to rest beside her beloved Charles. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to Garfield's Rescue, Inc., P.O. Box 257, Kilmarnock, VA 22482.
