Obituary for Jerry Wayne Hohnbaum

Jerry Wayne Hohnbaum, 70, of Coles Point passed away at home on May 8, 2023. He was born in Ashland, Virginia to the late Gustave Albert Hohnbaum and the late Florence Estelle Breedlove Hohnbaum. Jerry was retired from a long and distinguished career as a firefighter with the Richmond City Fire Department. He was a graduate of Patrick Henry High School, class of 1971.

Left to cherish his memory are his devoted partner of 25 years, Sally Gering; his beloved son Anthony W. Hohnbaum (Michelle); his grandsons C. Scott Hohnbaum, Jr. and Sean Ross Hohnbaum; his stepson Eric Holt (Bambi); his step-grandchildren L. Ashely Crawley (Cody) and J. Holden Samuels; his great-grandchildren Aubree and Langdon; his sister Carol Sharp (George); and many friends and brothers from the fire department. Jerry was predeceased by his parents; his son C. Scott Hohnbaum, Sr.; and his step-granddaughter Autumn Sanford. He was also preceded in death by his cherished pup Barnaby.

Jerry was a larger-than-life guy. Always the life of the party, he made everyone laugh, feel welcome and included in the fun. He loved being a firefighter and the bravery and camaraderie that came along with it. Jerry played Left Field for Teams One and Two in the Richmond Firefighter’s softball league for many years, traveling for tournaments with firefighters all across the country. This led to friendships with other firefighters from departments all over the country. Jerry could be in the most obscure place and inevitably he would run into people he had met with the softball league. He also loved retirement, spending much of it on the water boating. He enjoyed being a snowbird and spending the colder months with Sally at their home in Florida and they enjoyed their retirement home on the Potomac in the Northern Neck in the summer. Our lives are brighter for having known him and a bit dimmer for having lost him. He will be deeply missed by so many people.

A service to celebrate Jerry’s life will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 15, 2023 at the Richmond East Moose Lodge, 7167 Flag Lane, Mechanicsville, VA 23111. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make a donation in Jerry’s memory to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org.
