Obituary for Betty Lou Rock (Scates)

Betty Lou Scates Rock “Gawney”, 85, of Richmond County slipped away peacefully and went to be with the Lord on January 2, 2023.

Betty was born in Westmoreland County on July 7, 1937, and grew up in the Northern Neck, the second of four children to Joseph and Alma Scates.

After graduating from Washington and Lee High School in 1956, Betty worked for the Coca-Cola Bottling Company in Montross before moving to Richmond for a secretarial job with the Exxon Corporation.

Betty married the love of her life, Charles H. Rock, at Newland Church of Christ in Warsaw in 1963.

Family and church were of utmost importance to Betty. She and Charlie were inseparable in life and ministry until his passing in 2008, with Betty actively supporting him in his various leadership roles at Berea Church of Christ (Fairfax County), Calvary Christian Church (Burke, Va.), Central Christian Church (Springfield, Va.), and Newland.

A devoted and caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Betty put her trust in Jesus at an early age. Her family celebrates her homegoing and is comforted by the fact that those who know Christ as Lord and Savior will join Betty in His presence one day.

Betty is survived by her children, Cynthia Hubbard (Ken) of Hagerstown, Ind., Charles Rock Jr. (Kristi) of Cross Junction, Va.; six grandchildren: Jeffrey Hubbard (Brianna), Nichole Moreland (Coty), Tyler Rock, Kailey Rock, Matthew Rock, and Lylah Rock; three great-grandchildren: Gabriel Hubbard, Laurel Hubbard, and Liam Pinnick; and other loving relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be at Newland Church of Christ in Warsaw on Saturday, January 7, 2023, at 2pm, with the family receiving guests beginning at 1pm. Burial will be in the church cemetery following the ceremony.

Memorial contributions may be made to Newland Church of Christ, the Richmond County Volunteer Fire Department, or the American Heart Association.
