Obituary for Mary Rachelle Paphides

Mary Rachelle Paphides Grimstead: December 9, 1946 - September 9, 2022

Mary Rachelle Paphides Grimstead, the wife of Robert (Bobby) Grimstead, passed away early Friday morning, September 9, 2022, after a years-long battle with dementia.

Mary was born to Kyriacos Costi (Koullis) and Nettie (Baron) Paphides in Norfolk, VA. She spent her teen years in Arlington, VA, and moved to the Outer Banks in the 1970s, settling in the Northern Neck in the 1980s.

Mary lived a full life. She was an artist. She was a restaurateur and so successfully ran her father’s restaurant in Tyson Corner, VA, that she was able to take her family of 9 to Jamacia for a week’s vacation. That kicked off her love of the restaurant business and upon moving to the Northern Neck, she briefly ran the Kinsale Marina restaurant and then the Mooring restaurant. It was there, at the Mooring in 1990, that she met and fell in love with Bobby Grimstead. They spent the next 32 years together, marrying in March 2015.

Mary then became self-employed designing docks and piers, bulkheading, and riprap for homeowners wishing to enhance and protect their waterfront property. She would then prepare the application and site documents, attend all required public hearings, and obtain permits for the waterfront project. Mary’s artistic talents were so evident in her site drawings that the Westmoreland County Wetland Committee commented that they were the prettiest ever seen!

Mary was preceded in death by her father and mother, and her uncles and aunts of Virginia Beach: Doula (Polly) and John Lewis, and John and Della Mae Paphites.

Mary is survived by her loving husband Bobby and his sons Robby (Beth) and Michael of Montross; brothers Brian (Laura) Paphides of Lake City, FL and Gus (Elaine T) Paphides of Montross, sister Elaine of Montross; adoring nephew, Brian Cristian (Cris) Paphides of Atlantic Beach, FL, and so many other cousins, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren in Montross, Florida, and North Carolina.

Mary was a dreamer, an artist, a loving wife, sister, aunt, and grandmother. Mary was always smiling, always laughing!

Her family would like to thank the caring staff at Envoy of Westover Hills and at Heartland Hospice Services in Richmond, VA.

A funeral service will be scheduled for a later date. Please share any photos you have of Mary in the “Photos & Videos” link above 🙏

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Westmoreland County Animal Shelter. She so loved dogs!
