Obituary for David Franklin "Rock-a-Bye" Green
David Franklin “Rock-A-Bye” Green, 85, of Montross, Virginia, passed away peacefully Friday, May 13, 2022. Dave was born February 3rd, 1937, in Newport News, Virginia. He was a graduate of York High School in 1955.
In his youth Dave made quite a name for himself as one of the toughest pitchers you would face anywhere in men’s fast pitch softball. Sharing his athletic talents with the youngsters of the community he dedicated much of his free time coaching both little league football and baseball teams. He was a retired union carpenter who then went on to build homes locally as a private contractor. Dave “Rock-A-Bye” was a lifelong outdoorsman and houndsman. One of his greatest passions in life was fox hunting, and training and raising fox hounds. In 1987, Dave bought a parcel of property in the Oldhams area and turned it into a fox hound training preserve known as Rock-A-Bye Fox Pen, for his enjoyment and the benefit of other houndsmen like him. He also enjoyed spending time in the woods hunting and on the water fishing.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Calvin and Ora Frances Green, and also by his brother Thomas Calvin, Jr.
Rock-A-Bye is survived by his son Russell Lee Green (Sherry); his brother Robert “Bobby” Wayne Green (Barbara); his ex-wife and lifelong friend Agnes Green Beauchamp; his stepson John Mark Tucker; his stepdaughter Elizabeth Tucker Pope (Michael Septak); his granddaughters: Hailee Frances Green (Tyler Jones), Jenna Nichole Green, and Jordan Elizabeth Sexton (Chaz); and his great-granddaughters Avery and Lydia.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of David F. Green will be held at Rappahannock Church of Christ (4324 Richmond Rd. Warsaw VA, 22572) on Saturday, May 21, 2022. Service will begin at 11:00 a.m. with visitation from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The Reverend Walker Gaulding will officiate.
