Obituary for Edna Sanford Douglas

Edna Sanford Douglas

Edna Douglas, 100, passed away peacefully during an afternoon nap on May 5, 2022 in Tappahannock, VA.
She was born in Tucker Hill, VA, to W.H.and Annie Dameron Sanford. During her career she worked at several banks, as a bookkeeper at a number of firms, and finally with the Postal Service, as a clerk and, finally, postmaster. She was an ardent conservationist, of both land and local history. It seems fitting that Earth Day falls on her birthday. Her crowning achievement was being one of the five founders of the Kinsale Foundation.

She is survived by her daughter Margaret Douglas of Dahlgren and much loved nieces and nephews, their children and grandchildren. She is also survived by her devoted caregiver Arlene Byrd and the residents of Riverside Condominiums in Tappahannock, past and present, who became a part of her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings Mary Ellen McClanahan, Ann Carter, W.H. “Willie” Sanford, Jr., Lucy Mercer, James Kenneth Sanford, and Calvin Sanford, and her husbands Clifford Pittman and L.E. “Dutch” Douglas.

Many thanks to the loving staff at Carrington Place, Tappahannock for treating her like family during the past two months.

There will be no services, but, in keeping with her love of celebration and song, there will be Celebrations of Life in the future.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kinsale Foundation, P.O. Box 307, Kinsale, VA 22488.
