Obituary for Joseph Garnett Aylor Jr.

Dr. Joseph Garnett Aylor Junior, 73, passed away on Wednesday November 3, 2021.

Joe grew up in Gretna, Virginia where he attended Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Virginia and graduated with distinction in 1966. Joe went on to attend the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia where he was selected to live on The Lawn his Senior year and graduated with honors in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science in Geology. Joe continued his education at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona, where he earned his Masters of Geology in 1972. He completed his education at the Florida State University in Gainesville, Florida where he earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Geology in 1994.

Upon completion of his doctorate, Joe returned out West as a surveyor, cartologist, and geologist for the Shell Oil Corporation. Over the course of his accomplished career, Joe worked across many of the desert and mountainous landscapes of the Western United States, the Appalachian Forest, as well as the Boreal Forest in Canada. Most recently, Joe was the Vice President of Virginia Uranium until he retired in 2014.

Joe enjoyed spending his leisure time fishing, boating, and relaxing with his best 4-legged friend, Katy girl, at his childhood vacation home on the Rappahannock River. He was also an avid supporter of University of Virginia football and enjoyed cheering on the Cavaliers from his seats on the 10 yard line at Scott Stadium.

He is survived by his Wife, Susan Catherine Aylor of Chatham, Virginia and his two Step Daughters, Amy Catherine Webber of Los Angeles, California, and Elizabeth Ann Keller of Staunton, Virgina. His sister Carol Aylor Martin of Farnham, Virginia, his brother, John Lewis Aylor of Richmond, and his sister Louise Aylor Clement of Lynchburg, Virginia.

He is preceded in death by his father Joseph Garnett Aylor, who passed away on April 2, 2000, his mother Caroline Marshall Aylor, who passed away on March 22, 1995 and his eldest sister Katherine Aylor Doss, who passed away on April 10, 1988.
