Obituary for John E. Krainock
John E. Krainock, 79, of Kinsale passed away on Friday, March 5 at his home.
John was born on July 31, 1941 in Harrisburg, PA. He was the second of three children born to John and Audrey Krainock. John was preceded in death by his parents older sister, Margaret Krainock and younger brother, William Krainock.
John is survived by his loving companion of many years, Barbara Paris and her family: son, Steve Paris (Katherine) of Hague, VA; daughter, Janet Panopulos (James) of San Jose, CA, granddaughter, Casey Lambert of Ruther Glen, VA; grandsons Jonathan Paris of Fredericksburg, VA; and Vasili Panopulos and Gregory Panopulos, both of San Jose, CA; and great grandchildren Chelsea, Madisyn, Wesley, and Liam.
When his father died in the US Navy in 1944, the family moved to Salem, NJ, where he graduated from High School. He served in the US Navy from 1960 to 1964. After the service, he worked as a System Analyst for Vitro Corporation in Silver Spring, MD and Red Bank NJ. In 1972 John began attending Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ where he received a Bachelor of Science in Management (1974) and a Masters of Arts in Economics (1977). He was very proud of the fact that he completed his education at a later period in his life.
After graduation, John worked for Middlesex County, NJ as a Research Economist, Planner and Grant Management Coordinator. In 1979 John moved to Virginia to resume his career with Vitro Corporation where he supported the Naval Sea Systems Command, Naval Electronics Command, Naval Supply Command, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. In 1991 John joined the US Department of Agriculture as an Economist with Rural Development, where he stayed until his retirement in 2003.
While living in Virginia, John took up the sport of running. He was never fast but he had excellent endurance. He was able to complete five marathons and one ultra marathon. His marathons included two of the biggest, New York City and the Marine Corps.
Upon retirement, he relocated to Westmoreland County, which he had been visiting since 1990. He built a new home on property that he had bought in 1993 and had named Magyar Hill. Prior to his relocation, John had been active in a number of community organizations. He became even more active after his retirement.
John served as Treasurer for Richmond and Westmoreland Counties Habitat for Humanity, President and Vice President of National Active Retired Federal Employees Northern Neck Chapter 1823, President of Westmoreland County Education Foundation. John was also served as Treasurer of the Westmoreland County Housing Coalition, Membership Chair and Treasurer of the Northern Neck Native Plant Society, and Treasurer of the Northern Neck Uncorked Wine Tasting Group. John was a familiar face at meetings of the Westmoreland County Board of Supervisors. He served on committees associated with housing and economic development.
With all of his activities, John found time to be a substitute teacher in the Westmoreland County School system. As a teacher he was known as Mr. K. He loved teaching math and history. He was constantly encouraging students to further their educations by going to college and used himself as an example that you are never too old to get a degree.
John had a philosophical bent. He felt he should not take up space on this earth after he had died. Per his wishes, John’s remains were cremated and his ashes will be sprinkled at Magyar Hill.
