Bennie Shepherd, Jr., 78, of Warsaw, Virginia, passed away at home on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 with his family by his side. Born in Sparta, Virginia to Benjamin Franklin Shepherd, Sr. and Bernice Alexander Shepherd. Bennie owned and operated a lawn care business.

Bennie will be remembered for his love of nature and outdoor sports, particularly rabbit hunting and boating. He loved to be on the water and between his professional life and his hobbies he was often found outside. Above all, however, Bennie loved his family. He took great delight in his growing family, especially his grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving companion of 29 years, Shannon Coates; his sons: Gerald “Moochie” Shepherd (Kacneis), Dustin Bailey, and Benjamin Shepherd (Kayla); his daughter Errin Shepherd (Jose); his brother James Shepherd (Virginia); his grandchildren: Arriana, Alyssa, Ciara, Ellie and two more sweet ones on the way; and his loving friend and former spouse, JoAnne Shepherd. Bennie was predeceased by his parents and his sister Shirley Thompkins.

A walk-through visitation will be held at Noon on Saturday, January 23rd, 2021 at Welch Marks Funeral Home in Warsaw with a graveside service to follow at the Grant’s Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Montross at 2:00 p.m. with the Reverend Lionel Richards officiating. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make a donation to honor Bennie’s brave fight to the American Cancer Society at 4240 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, VA 23060 or to

Benny was always a kind man that you could trust to do work for you because you knew it would be done correctly. He took pride in how he performed different work for you. He was always extremely dependable. A few years after my father died, my mom had him do some things for us that we physically could not do. He was who I would call on to do my grass when I was unable to do it. He cut my grass the whole time I was away and I never had to worry about it. He showed me how to change a battery in a riding mower. This was after he had charged my battery with his truck which lasted for about two weeks. Benny just said, “it’s time to get a new battery and I’ll show you how to put it in.” You may laugh but that was Benny. I’m sorry that I didn’t know he had died until yesterday. He was always wonderful to my mom and me. I will always remember his kindness, his laugh, and his smile.

Bennie made life challenging to say the least, but he had the heart of a giant! He always had a solution for a problem, even if it didn't make a lick of sense to me. If it didn't work, we went back to the drawing board. When we separated, he told me that even though we weren't together he would take care of me for the rest of his life. And he did just that, right up until the day died.
I never stopped loving you hon. I guess you were that one and only. Rest in peace dear heart. 🙏
