Larry Brooks was my first cousin, however he seemed more like an uncle to me due to our difference in age. Most of my memories of Larry were from the times when I was growing up in Westmoreland County more than 30 years ago. I have many memories of Larry from back in those days. Larry was a regular guest at our house, or rather I should say he was not a guest at all - he was family. I remember Larry coming over often in preparation for a fishing or hunting trip with my Dad, or sometimes just to hang out while my Dad shared a few licks on the guitar. Sometimes the visit may have involved cleaning fish or just plans to walk around the farm later on. What I remember most about Larry from my time around him was his kind and gentle spirit, and also his bright and infectious smile. I always enjoyed having Larry come around the house when I was a kid, and I can still remember the sound of his laughter filling our home back then.

The last time I saw Larry, I believe, was back in 2008 when I lost my own Mom unexpectedly. On that difficult evening at the funeral home in Montross, when I was an integral part of the receiving line for family and friends, Larry sought me out once my duties were mostly over and I was able to relax for a minute. When he found me, Larry grasped my hands firmly in his and looked into my eyes for what seemed like a long time. What he told me was that it was going to be hard. Then he repeated it. He said that the time I was going through would be really really hard, but that I would get through it. He said that I would have to be strong. It’s actually very difficult to describe the level of support and compassion Larry gave to me in those moments, but his words and the love and understanding he offered at that difficult time in my life will always stay with me.

Now we have come to a time when we must also say goodbye to Larry. I can only offer his own words back as words of comfort for those of us who will miss him. It is going to be hard. Really hard. But we will get through it. We must be strong. And one of these days, we will be seeing him once again.
