Olive was a dear friend and like another sister to me.
She was good to everyone and especially helpful and caring to my sister, Brenda Hinton. She took Brenda to church with her and some days they just did things around the house or yard, or would go riding. They both loved to ride.
I love how her obituary describes her as outspoken; she was indeed, one who spoke her mind, but it was always meant to be helpful, to provide a learning experience. One time, when we went to Richmond to see Stanley, we stopped at Burger King near the VA hospital. As we went in, a couple stopped us, asking for money. Olive told them, I won't give you money, but I'll buy you a meal. The man turned and said he didn't want food, just the money. Olive told him, " Well you are not hungry then and I'm not giving you money to go smoke, drink, or drug." The man said to his partner, "You can't make a decent living anymore!" Olive said, " Oh yes you can, straighten up, get a job, and get help when you need it and help others when you can." She was never unkind.
Another time, she and her brother Lawrence went with Stanley and me for a weekend of wedding fun. Some of my other relatives, sisters were also going, but they left an hour before us. Olive had faith we would catch up with them in all those lanes of Maryland traffic. I thought, yeah right. This was before GPS was so popular. Low and behold, a couple of driving hours later, as I went to turn in the hotel driveway; Olive matter of factly said, "See I told you ! " In fact, the car in front of me at the traffic light, was Brenda and Sonny !! Who would have thought we would not only catch up with them, but be directly behind them in traffic ?
When Olive told you something, as she would often say, "You better believe it ! "
If you had Olive for a friend; you had a friend for life.
I will miss her kind and fun spirit. I imagine her going into Heaven, running to see Jesus, her Mama and Daddy, husband, son, brothers, and sisters, and telling them, "I'm here, let's get this party started !! "
