Obituary for Robert Augustus Scates

Robert Augustus Scates, 75, of Warsaw passed away peacefully on Wednesday February 26, 2020 after a courageous battle with cancer. A lifelong resident of the Northern Neck, Robert was a retired Operator B at VDOT for over 34 years and was a member of Menokin Baptist Church. He was the son of Earl Zacharias Scates and Martha Ann Dishman Scates and was the husband of Louise Wheeler Scates.

Left behind to cherish his memory are his wife; his sons: Charles Mervin Scates (Nora Mae) and Robert Augustus Scates, Jr. (Tonya); his daughter Susan Melinda Symonette (Victor); his sister Linda Ellen Holsinger (Edward); grandchildren: R. Adam Hedges (Kristen), Chandler R. Symonette, Etienne M. Symonette and Grayson T. Scates; his great-granddaughter Acadia Rose Hedges; his nephews Steven Holsinger and Gary Holsinger; his best friend and cousin Mary Elizabeth Sanford; and his two pet cats Midnight and Grayce. Robert was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Earl Edward Scates.

Robert loved tending to his lawn, completing 3D puzzles and other brainteasers, and greatly enjoyed Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. He loved life, good food and his church, where he served as an usher – but he loved his family most of all.

A memorial service to celebrate Robert’s life will be held on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at Menokin Baptist Church in Warsaw with the Reverend Dr. Jason Patrick officiating. The family will receive friends following this service at a luncheon in the Menokin Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, where all are encouraged to come and share memories and thoughts of Robert.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that you honor Robert’s memory by making a donation to either the Bon Secours Community Hospice House, 1133 Old Bon Air Road, North Chesterfield, VA 23235 or to the Rappahannock Church of Christ Hearts and Hands Cancer Ministry, 4324 Richmond Road, Warsaw, VA 22572.
