Obituary for Stanley Goodwin Sanders Jr.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Stanley Goodwin Sanders, Jr., 68, of Tappahannock/Warsaw, Virginia. Stanley passed into the arms of our loving Lord on Saturday, March 23, 2019 surrounded by his loving family.

Stanley was born in Warsaw, Virginia on May 15, 1950 to Ida Mae and Stanley Goodwin Sanders, Sr. He was preceded in death by his father, Stanley Goodwin Sanders, Sr; and beloved brother David Sanders.

Stanley is survived by his life partner and constant companion, Barbara Ayers; her son, Ashby Ayers; and their beloved furry companion, Trevor. Stanley is also survived by his mother, Ida Mae Sanders; brothers, Joe (Brenda) of Mechanicsville; Charles (Pat) of Warsaw; and sister, Rosa Forrester of Warsaw. Stanley also leaves to cherish his memory his two loving children, Shannon Trusty (Jimbo) of Mechanicsville; and Shawn Sanders of Warsaw; and the most precious lights of his life, “the girls”, his twin granddaughters, Ivy and Kai Trusty. Stanley also leaves a host of proud nieces and nephews and dear friends.

Stanley was the first All State Football Champion of Rappahannock High School, a Vietnam Veteran, a loving, kind father, and a selfless giving soul. Stanley never met a stranger. He persevered through so many obstacles never letting those challenges affect his kind and giving spirit. He was a true fighter through the end. Though our hearts are broken and we grieve his loss here on earth, we know that he is no longer suffering. We could not have asked for a better example of strength, perseverance, and determination. A true hero, Stanley impacted so many lives in his life and leaves a beautiful legacy and many cherished memories. Stanley, we know your time on Earth is done and your work in Heaven has just begun. Try to stay out of trouble up there! You did a job well done and we are so proud of you!

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the local VFW Auxiliary # 7167 Scholarship Fund, P. O. Box 594, Warsaw, VA 22572 or in true Stanley fashion, do a good deed for someone, make someone smile or laugh, crack a joke, pull a prank-brighten someone else’s life. Life is short.

The family would like to say a big “THANK YOU” to the VAMC staff. He was loved by so many there. Stanley, Daddy, Granddaddy, “Bubba”, “Stan the Man”, “Bear”, we love you with all our hearts. Though there is now a void here on Earth, we know this is not goodbye. We love you and thank you for the years of joy, laughter, and smiles you gave us. Behave yourself up there!! As “the girls” would say “we love you to the moon and back”. Goodbyes are not the end; they simply mean we will miss you, until we meet again! “To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die.”
