Obituary for Thomas Gatewood Baker

Thomas Gatewood Baker, 77, of Montross, passed away on Saturday, December 29, 20 18. He was a lifelong resident of Montross. He graduated from Washington and Lee High School in 1959 and went directly to work for the U. S. Navy. He worked his entire career, spanning 50 years, at the Naval Base in Dahlgren, VA, culminating in a role developing telemetry systems for STANDARD Missile and AEGIS Ballistic Missile Defense. He retired in 2010.
He was an avid boater, traveler and ham radio enthusiast.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Anne Baker; son, Thomas Edward Baker (Ann) of King George, VA; daughter, Loren Garruto (Michael) of Pittsburgh, PA; and the great joy of his life, his grandchildren, Katherine, Brian, Erin and Paige.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, January 4, 2019 at Welch Funeral Home, Montross, VA.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at St. James Episcopal Church Cemetery. Rev. Dr. Christopher Agnew and Rev. John LeGault will officiate.
