Obituary for Naomi Mary Guthrie (Effinger)

Print
Naomi Mary Guthrie departed her Earthly life on Tuesday October 9, 2018 at home surrounded by her loving family. Naomi was born in Tolson Heights, Maryland (formerly Maryland Park, Maryland) and lived there until the family moved to Lewisetta in 1970. The daughter of George William Effinger, Jr. and Thelma Cecelia Thompson Effinger, Naomi was also the wife of George Thomas Guthrie. Her professional life was rich and varied. She spent the first part of her career as a secretary on Capitol Hill and wrote speeches for several presidents. Naomi worked as a private investigator as well. She was a faithful member of Northern Neck Baptist serving as church secretary until her illness prevented her from continuing.

Aside from her many professional accomplishments Naomi enjoyed many other pursuits. One of her greatest passions was music and she was an accomplished singer. She served as the music director at the Lighthouse Academy, was a founder of the Callao Fire Department majorettes and was a member of the Northern Neck Choral Group. Naomi also loved sewing and crochet. She loved to spend time with her dear friends Terri Cazer and Pam Theis.

Naomi was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and she leaves many behind to cherish her memory: her husband; her son, Steven C. Effinger of Richmond; her daughters Suzanne M. Bowles of Reedville and Juanita A. Haynie (Sutton) of Wicomico Church; brother George W. Effinger III; sisters Cecelia Weidemann and Patricia Ann Buscher; grandchildren Jason Haynie, Olivia Hurd, Mindy Nolen, Shanna Bowles, Linda Lowery, Randi Jewell, Arthur Bowles, Jr., Richard C. Roberts-Effinger and Jeffery P. Roberts-Effinger; great-grandchildren Brianna Hurd, Madison Hurd, Olaf Ryan Hurd, Jr., Jacob Stevens, Alex Gough, Bailey Gough, James Lowery, Victoria Lowery, Daniel Lowery, Thomas Lee Nolen, Allison Jewell, Andrew Jewell, Serenity Faith Hickman, Melody Anne Haynie and Matthew Lawrence Haynie. Naomi was predeceased by her parents, her sister Dorothy Burnett-Taylor and her brother Francis Roland Effinger.

A memorial service to honor Naomi’s life will be held on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at 11 a.m. at the Northern Neck Baptist Church in Callao. Rev. Josh Brassard will officiate. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Naomi’s honor to the National Fabry Disease Foundation, 4301 Connecticut Avenue, N.W., Suite 404, Washington D.C. 20008.
