Obituary for Forrest Stephen "Steve" Cox

Print
With sadness I announce the passing of my husband Steve Cox, 78, of Montross, Virginia (formerly of Greenbelt, Maryland) on October 5, 2018, at our home. With him at his passing was his wife, Gaye Dawson, his friend and caregiver, Tammy Payne, Donald Payne, and his little furry buddy, Kahlua. Steve is now with his beloved Mom, Frances Lambert Lytle. To help celebrate his life are: his brother Charles Michael Lytle “Mike”, and his wife Stephanie Ashley of Annapolis, Maryland; nephew Charles Michael Lytle, Jr. (Anna) of Arnold, Maryland; cousins Mary Catherine Walters “Cathy” of King George, John Curtis Lambert of Germantown, Maryland; and many friends he made over years. He never met a stranger.
He worked 35 ½ years with the power company in Washington DC (PEPCO). While at PEPCO, he volunteered for the draft and was inducted into the U.S. Army, September 1962. He was stationed at Bad Kreuznach, Germany with the 8th Supply & Transportation Battalion, 8th infantry division. He was Early Release Overseas Returnee in 1964 and remained on Active Reserve until September 1968 when he received an Honorable Discharge.
Steve loved his boat, wild birds, his music (50’s classics and R & B), reminiscing about his motorcycle and weekends at Wildwood (He was the original Fonz) and was an avid fan of Delbert McClinton. He hated cold weather and loved to travel, seeing European sights while in the Army and on return seeing much of the USA. After marriage with Gaye, he continued traveling with notable visits to Australia and New Zealand, western states and the Florida Keys.
A Celebration of Steve’s life will be held on Wednesday, October 10, 2018, at Welch Funeral Home, Montross Chapel, with visitation at 10 am, with service at 11 am. The graveside service will be held at 2:30 pm, at Historyland Memorial Park in King George, Virginia. In keeping with Steve’s wishes, we are to wear blue jeans, casual dress/no suits, no ties, and no black.
Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to Riverside Home Care Hospice, 289 Hospital Road, Tappahannock, Virginia 22560, or Hospice Support Services, 28 St. Johns Street, Warsaw, Virginia, 22572.
