Obituary for Mary Ellen Butler (Rock)

Mary Rock Butler peacefully departed her Earthly life on Friday, September 21, 2018, surrounded by her loving children. She was born in Richmond, Virginia to Willie Rock and Bertha Balderson Rock of Callao, Virginia. She married her best friend, Clyde Monroe Butler, Sr. and Mary and Clyde raised their family between Callao, Oak Grove, and Calvert County, Maryland. Mary retired from Safeway as a forklift operator, and over the course of her life held many other jobs besides. She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church in Callao. She was a hard worker, phenomenal cook, and terrific gardener who loved being outdoors, but her real passion was her family. Mary was extremely close to her sisters. Her husband was the greatest love of her life and their almost fifty-year marriage was an inspiration to all who knew them. She was devoted to her children. When her grandchildren and great-grandchildren began to arrive, Mary was delighted.

Mary was predeceased by her parents; her husband; her dear son Robert Paul Butler; and her brothers: Jr. Rock, Leonard Rock, and Ronnie Rock. Left behind to cherish her memory are her sons, Clyde Monroe Butler, Jr. (Debra), and Richard Thomas Butler (Donna Lee Wilkinson); her daughters, Joan Ellen Potter (Michael) and Wanda Jean Tyrrell (Ronnie); her sisters Nancy King and Elois “Nuchie” Taylor; her grandchildren Olivia, Cori, Daryn, Tommy, Shawn, Tammy, Stacie, Tracie, Ronnie, Chris, Shelley, James, Linda, Shannon and Mark; and twenty-five amazing great-grandchildren.

Her funeral service will be held at Bethany Baptist Church at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 29, 2018. Reverend Kori Kiss will officiate. She will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband at Pope’s Creek Baptist Church in Oak Grove at 4 p.m. that same day. The family will receive friends at the Marks Chapel of the Welch Funeral Home in Warsaw on Friday, September 28, 2018 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that a donation in Mary’s memory be made to either Riverside Tappahannock Hospice, 289 Hospital Road, Tappahannock, Virginia 22560 or to Bethany Baptist Church, P.O. Box 641, Callao, Virginia 22435.
