Life Story for William Gottlieb Horn Jr.

William Gottlieb  Horn Jr.
William Gottlieb Horn, Jr. passed away on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at his home in Montross, VA . He was born in Buffalo, NY on September 11, 1932 and attended public elementary and vocational high school. The Korean War broke out and upon graduation from high school, he joined the US Navy in 1951. He served on the USS Coral Sea as an electrician’s mate and served three tours of duty in the Mediterranean Sea. He traveled throughout many countries and cities around the Med and these experiences sparked a life-long interest in History. Upon reentry into civilian life, he attended New York State University College for Teachers in Buffalo and graduated in 1959, receiving his Masters Degree the following year.
He taught American History and Psychology for most of his 28 years at Starpoint Central H. S. in the Lockport, NY area and was also the track team coach. He used his love of history as a Merit Badge counselor for the local Boy Scout troop.
Bill was active in the First English Lutheran Church in Lockport, NY where he served for many years as the Sunday School director and teacher in addition to serving on the council.
In 1997 he and his wife, Beverly, moved to Virginia to be nearer to their family in southern Maryland. He was active at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Callao as a church communicant, elder and usher. He was a member of Coast Guard Aux. #310. He served as a docent at Robert E Lee’s Birthplace and was a blacksmith for the many visiting school groups giving demonstrations as highlights of the tour. He loved the outdoors, boating, and was an avid runner until age 79.
Mr. Horn is survived by his wife, Beverly Ann Horn of Montross, VA; daughter, Lynette Marie Horn (Robert Willett) of Woodstock, CT, and son, William Gary Horn (Angela) of Lusby, MD; grandchildren, Jacquelin Horn, Kristin Horn and William G. Horn, Jr.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Callao, VA.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, April 20, 2018 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Callao, VA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, PO Box 576, Callao, Virginia 22435 or Riverside Hospice, 618 Hospital Road, Medical Arts Bldg. A, Suite 201, Tappahannock, VA 22560.
