Condolence: On behalf of the Friends of Chippokes Plantation State Park, we would like to send our sincere sympathy to Bill's entire family. We were saddened by his death, and we all have some good and funny things he would talk about. He was also a wonderful Park Manager who always helped the Friends Groups a lot. We all worked well together. We will all miss him.

Condolence: I most appreciated Bill's dedication & loyalty to Virginia State Parks. I first worked with Bill in May 1992 when the Virginia State Park's compiled 16 of the Best staff members throughout the State to convert it's newest acquisition Kiptopeke from a private campground into the crown jewel of a multi-operational State Parks. I can still remember Bill's leadership in creating the 2 walkways off the Parking Area, one going to the swim area on the northern beach & one going to the fishing area on the southern beach (where I know he was successful catching flounder). I next worked with Bill at Westmoreland State Park where Bill seasoned into the Manager position. He finished off his career as Manager at Chippokes State Park.
Not too many people have a forty year career anywhere, and Bill joins a select few that have had forty year careers with the State Park service. I understand that the 40 years that Bill served, he has been seen and been part of the most transformative years. From the early 70's when staff were "caretakers" to the early 10's when staff were diverse managers (LE officers, Resource Managers, Recreational & Facility Managers, etc). Kudos to Bill for his role during the transformation.
Bill & Linda was able to raise Matt & BJ in Westmoreland housing. What a great and peaceful environment. I pray God to comfort Linda and family. Rest in Peace.

Condolence: I enjoyed working with Bill for many years at Westmoreland State Park. I watched his sons grow up before my very eyes. Bill was like a big ole' teddy bear to me. He loved to play jokes on people...like putting tape on the lens of my glasses just to name one! I was very fond of Bill, Linda and kids. He was a boss, but also my friend. I pray God will comfort his wife, children, grandchildren and all the family. God Bless

Condolence: In the early 70s Billy Jacobs was one of the exceptional people that influenced my life. As a young, high strung and adventurous child turned loose in Seashore State Park, I was fortunate to have bigger than life outdoors mentors like Billy that would not only tolerate such a child in his park every single day, but embrace it and take the time to work with and develop a kid he had no previous connection with or reason to help.

Other than that he was a good person, that cared about others and Virginia State Parks. The day my own father passed, Billy drove us to the hospital in his ranger green jeep. I wasn't fooled by or afraid of the massive blond haired football hero, though in hindsight I think being too young to participate in the daily tackle football game beside the park shop was a good thing. Within that man was a kind and thoughtful soul that helped to shape my life and ultimately one of the reasons I came home to our parks.

Over 40 plus years our trails would cross as I drifted in and out of Virginia following my own path and when I returned to Virginia I had to good fortune to run into Billy at Kiptopeke during one of his RV excursions. We talked a while and caught up as best we could. Though the years had weathered us both, beneath that sought after patina was Billy Jacobs, Virginia State Parks Ranger, mentor to many, and a friend.

Go in peace Billy and cut grass into the wee hours if you wish.

Condolence: I send my deepest condolences to Billy's family. Billy was a colleague as well as my roommate when I was employed at Seashore State Park (now First Landing State Park). He was always an inspiration to be around because he always kept it really with a keen sense of humor. I remember when we lived in barracks and I was eating onion sandwiches, while Billy was chopping on juicy steaks. We always got a good chuckle over that. I’ll always remember the cold winters without heat at night and Red-Hot Heater that lit that place up in the mornings like a furnace. When Billy introduced me to Linda, I knew he had to be special a guy being able to pull and good looking fantastic personality gal like that. That was 70’s and I see that he has continued to touch so many people during his life journey. I will always embrace the many wonderful moments we shared. Rest in peace my friend.

Condolence: I was very sorry to hear the news about Bill. I remember meeting him when Barry and I visited Westmoreland State Park in 1987. He had left a welcome basket in our cabin that we stayed in while we visited the park. A very kind and thoughtful gesture of friendship between Barry and he.

Linda and sons, may your memories, love and support of family and friends help you through this difficult time. You have my deepest condolences.

Sincerely,

Jeanette Sarver

Condolence: I am a volunteer for Virginia State Parks and was please to have worked with Bill at Chippokes Plantation State Park and enjoyed talking with him about False Cape State Park. False Cape is where I volunteer most of the time and Bill was the Manager there in the 80's and he saw things at False Cape that I only heard and read about. Bill was very interesting to sit and listen too. It was so sad to hear of his passing and I know everyone will miss him. Our though and prays to his Family and Friends from us at False Cape.
