Obituary for James Gregory Lewis

Greg was born July 25, 1951, at his parent’s home in Haynesville, Virginia. He passed away peacefully on March 30, 2017, at his home in Reedville, Virginia, surrounded by his family. Greg fought and won his battle with non-Hodgkins t-cell lymphoma with a stem cell transplant, but due to his weakened immune system, succumbed to Fusarium Fungus condition.

Greg graduated from Rappahannock High School in 1970 and later graduated from Smithdeal Business College in Richmond. He enlisted in the Virginia Army National Guard in December of 1971, and served for six years.

He established “Little River Seafood” in 1983, as an oyster and crab picking facility. Greg was a business entrepreneur, growing the original operation into an importer and distributer of his crabmeat products and eventually included the value-added products as well.

Greg was proud to have served on the Richmond County School Board for fifteen years. He was a Deacon and Trustee of Bethany Baptist Church in Callao, Virginia, and was a member of The Gideons International. He was also a member of the Virginia Seafood Council.

He is survived by his wife, Donna Garber Lewis; two daughters, Kelly Lewis Minor, of Reedville, Virginia, and Amanda Lewis Stalnaker of Tappahannock; two brothers, Evans Lewis (Faye) and Larry Lewis (Janet); two sisters, Barbara Lewis Schools and Janice Lewis Zumot, and four much-loved grandchildren, Corrie Minor, Cameron Minor, Jaxen Stalnaker and Brent Stalnaker and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Aulde S. Lewis and Virginia Hinson Lewis, and a sister, Brenda Lewis Baber.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, April 3, 2017, at Bethany Baptist Church, Callao, Virginia, with internment following in the church cemetery. Family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, April 2, 2017, at Welch Funeral Home – Marks Chapel, in Warsaw, Virginia.
