Jimmie Sherwood Williams, Ph.D, died peacefully on December 22 after a brief hospitalization. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Carolyn Hayes Williams, as well as three offspring, Dr. Robert Sherwood Williams, Jon Sterling Williams, and Merrily Terese Williams; two grandchildren, Brandallyn Tihinen and her husband Aaron, Justin Williams and his wife Christina; three great grandchildren, Elijah Tihinen and his sister Eileen, and Julius Williams.
Dr. Williams, Emeritus Professsor of Sociology at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), had an illustrious 34-year career, and was widely published in text books and professional journals. Early in his career, he distinguished himself as the International President of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honor society. Dr. Williams, a Fulbright Scholar, contributed significantly in world affairs and was a recognized intellectual leader in his field. Before retiring in 2005, Dr. Williams served as Department Chair for five years at VCU. His contribution to society cannot be overstated. From meager means, Dr. Williams surpassed all social class obstacles before him to become a world class educator. After retirement, he lived out his remaining years enjoying the serenity of the Northern Neck.
