Roxie B. Hamlet, 98, of Montross, the wonderful singer and musician, also known as “Minnie Paughas” for her great impressions of “Minnie Pearl”, went to be with her Father in Heaven on October 12, 2016. Roxie was well known and loved throughout Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland and Pennsylvania She performed with many famous entertainers including Jimmy Dean and Jim Orange and once used a flashlight to safely land a military helicopter in a small field during an ice storm, saving seven lives. She was truly one of God’s loveliest creatures. We will all miss her so much. She was a member of Nomini Baptist Church.
Roxie is survived by her longtime companion, Bill Brann; brother, George M. Bowman, Jr. of Lenoir NC; sisters, Reba Alverson (Bill) and Florence Balderson of Montross and Betty Sue Kerby, Lenoir, NC. and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Spencer Bascom Hamlet; brothers, Boyd Bowman, Eugene Bowman, George Bowman, and Cecil Bowman; and sisters, Jeanette Pipes and Cedren Robbins.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday October 17, 2016 at Welch Funeral Home, Montross Chapel. Interment will be in Nomini Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 16, 2016 at Welch Funeral Home, Montross, VA.
