Jerome Johnston (Jay) Worsham of Montross, VA passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 10, 2016.
Jerome was born in Cedar Rapids, IA on February 8, 1938, and grew up in Tipton, IA. He lived and worked on the family farm with his parents, George Worsham and Margaret Johnson Worsham, as well as being surrounded by many aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was the grandson of early Tipton settlers, Samuel Rice Johnston and Maude Latta Johnston, and Frank C. Worsham and Hazeltine Worsham Dallas. He graduated from Tipton High School in 1956, then attended Iowa State for one year.
In 1960, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, proudly serving his country for four years. He then moved to Maryland where he married his first wife, Sandra, and became the father of two children, a daughter, Cinda, and son, Michael.
He worked various jobs before starting work for the state of Maryland as a property assessor, where he met and married his current wife, Phyllis. He worked in the Prince George’s County office until retirement in 1995.
After retirement, he and Phyllis moved to Cookesvile, TN for two years where he started his custom golf club business, and coaching the Special Olympics of St. Mary’s Co., MD golf team. This endeavor brought many beautiful smiles and much joy to both Jay and the team players.
Jay and Phyllis eventually settled it the community of Stratford Harbour, enjoying the many activities provided, but most especially the amazing friends found. Their Ebenezer United Methodist Church family has also been a source of great happiness.
He is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis; daughter, Cinda Serbu; son, Michael (Susan); step daughter, Dawn Conway (Marty) granddaughters, Rebecca Serbu, Daytona Worsham and Erin Conway; grandsons, Matt Conway, Brian Conway, and Mark Conway; first wife, Sandra Brady; much loved aunt, Margaret Johnston of Tipton, as well as many cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his son-in-law, Michael Serbu, and step son Kevin Marron.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, September 16, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 144 Ebenezer Church Road, Oldhams , VA. Interment will be at a later date in the Masonic Cemetery in Tipton, IA
